Can you lay pavers on dirt?

The direct answer. You can set pavers on bare soil, and for a season or two they may look perfectly acceptable. They will not stay that way. Without an excavated subgrade, a compacted aggregate base, a screeded bedding layer, and rigid edge restraint, the field settles, spreads, and opens at the joints, and in West Hills it does so for two quite different reasons depending on where in town you stand.

Why the question matters more here than in most places

West Hills is not built on one soil. The flat tracts through the middle and east of town, the streets running off Sherman Way and Vanowen, sit on alluvial sands and gravels that can run three to eight feet deep over hardpan. That material is loose, free-draining, and easy to dig, which is precisely why it tempts people into skipping the base. It feels solid underfoot and it levels beautifully with a rake.

Push west of Valley Circle Boulevard, up onto the benches below Castle Peak and into the canyon lots, and the ground is expansive high-plasticity clay. It holds water, swells through the winter, and shrinks back through a long dry summer. It also feels solid underfoot in September. The difference is that one soil betrays a homeowner by drifting and the other by heaving, and neither failure is visible on the day the last paver goes down.

The belief, and what actually happens

The common belief

"Pavers are heavy. If I level the dirt, tamp it down with a plate compactor, throw an inch of sand over the top and set the units tight, gravity will hold everything in place."

What actually happens

Compacted soil is not a base. A base is a graded aggregate with a designed mix of particle sizes, so the stones lock against one another and distribute load sideways. Native soil has no such gradation. Under repeated foot traffic, and far faster under a car, the units press individually into the soil and the surface stops being flat.

On the valley-floor sand the failure is drift and dish. Loose sand offers no lateral confinement, so pavers migrate apart, joints open, sand washes out of them, and the field develops shallow depressions where people actually walk. Within a couple of years the edges have crept outward and the pattern no longer reads as straight.

On the clay benches the failure is movement. Winter rain swells the clay and lifts sections of the field, sometimes by an inch or more. Summer dries it and the same sections drop. Repeated through a few cycles, the surface becomes a series of trip hazards, and water that should have run off now ponds in the low spots and feeds the problem.

The follow-up belief

"Landscape fabric under the pavers will stop weeds and keep everything stable, so I can use less rock."

What actually happens

Fabric has a real role, but it is not the one most people assign it. Geotextile placed between the subgrade and the aggregate is a separation layer. Its job is to stop fine soil particles from working up into the base and stop base stone from punching down into soft ground. That matters enormously on clay and hardly at all as a weed strategy. Weeds in a paver field grow in the joint sand from seed blown in on top, not up from below, which is why the fall Santa Ana winds are the real source. Fabric cannot substitute for base depth, and using it as an excuse to place less rock guarantees the settlement it was meant to prevent.

The third belief

"It is only a patio, not a driveway, so the base does not need to be serious."

What actually happens

Load is only one of two things a base does. The other is drainage, and a patio needs that as much as a driveway. The aggregate section gives water somewhere to move laterally and away rather than sitting under the bedding layer. Skip it and a patio built against the back of a house becomes the thing that holds moisture against the foundation. A patio does need less depth than a driveway, and it still needs a base.

The word doing the most work in that table is "lifts." Aggregate placed in one deep layer and compacted from the top looks identical to a properly built section and behaves nothing like it. Compaction reaches only so far, and the untouched material below is what settles later.

Building on alluvial sand without regret

On the flat tracts near Sherman Way and Vanowen, where the alluvial sand is genuinely good subgrade, the base does not have to be heroic, but it does have to be honest. The crew excavates to a consistent depth, places and compacts aggregate in lifts, screeds the bedding layer, and builds deliberate fall into the surface so water leaves rather than pools. That is the whole difference between a job that stays flat for decades and one that dishes in three years.

On the sloping benches west of Valley Circle Boulevard, and on the canyon lots toward Box Canyon and Bell Canyon, the specification changes. Excavation goes deeper, geotextile separation is standard rather than optional, aggregate depth increases, subsurface drainage is designed in to keep water away from the section, and edge restraint is chosen to hold under lateral pressure on a grade. Where the address sits inside Bell Canyon, Sterling at West Hills, or Hidden Lake, gate clearance and staging on narrow roads are arranged before a start date, because delivering the extra rock a clay lot needs is a logistics question as much as a construction one.

None of that is exotic. It is simply the difference between installing pavers and building a pavement, and it is the baseline you should expect from a paver contractor working in West Hills.
